Preparing a specialty coffee requires attention to detail to extract the best flavor and aroma from.

Necessary ingredients and utensils:

  • High quality specialty coffee beans

  • Filtered water

  • Coffee grinder

  • Scales

  • Kettle

  • Paper or metal coffee filter

  • Jar or teapot

  • Stopwatch

  • Thermometer (optional)

Step 1: Choosing coffee beans:

Start by choosing high-quality coffee beans. Choose fresh beans, preferably recently roasted. The origin and type of grain (Arabica or Robusta) also influence the flavor.

Step 2: Grinding the grains:

Grind the coffee beans just before making coffee. The grind must be uniform and appropriate for the chosen preparation method. For brewed coffee, a medium grind is suitable. For methods such as French press, a coarser grind is required.

Step 3: Measuring the ingredients:

Weigh the coffee beans and water to ensure the correct proportion. The typical ratio is about 1:16 (one part coffee to 16 parts water), but you can adjust this ratio to suit your personal preferences.

Step 4: Heating the water:

Heat the water until it reaches the ideal temperature, which is generally between 90°C and 96°C. A kettle with a thermometer can help you control the temperature accurately.

Step 5: Filter preparation:

Place the coffee filter in the appropriate holder. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any residual paper flavor and heat the carafe or teapot.

Step 6: Adding the coffee beans:

Place the ground coffee beans in the filter. Make sure to distribute them evenly.

Step 7: Preparing the coffee:

Pour the hot water over the coffee beans in circular movements, starting in the center and moving towards the edges. This ensures uniform extraction. Avoid stirring the grains after adding water.

Step 8: Extraction timing:

Start a timer when the water touches the coffee beans. Extraction time varies depending on the preparation method and grinding, generally 2 to 4 minutes.

Step 9: Serve:

After extraction, remove the filter with the used coffee beans. Serve the coffee immediately in a warmed cup.

Step 10: Enjoy:

Enjoy the aroma and flavor of your special coffee. Feel the nuances of flavor and aroma that high-quality coffee beans can offer.

Remember that practice makes perfect when preparing specialty coffee. Experiment with different grains, preparation methods and adjustments in proportions until you find the flavor you like best. Specialty coffee is a unique sensory experience worth exploring.
